CoolerCamping options for your campfire experience. From cast iron Dutch Ovens to cook up gourmet feasts over your campfire to induction hobs for your VW Campervan. It's all here...
No CoolerCamping experience would be complete without the wonderful cast iron Dutch Oven. They're pretty heavy so you wont want one in your backpack but if you have transport they really do make campfire cooking very special. They come in a variety of sizes from 'big' right through to the ones that are big enough to feed a scout troup.
They're more than just a cooking pot though, they can also work as a kind of oven by piling hot fire embers on top of the rimmed lid. In this way you get heat from the top down as well as bottom up and you can even bake bread!
They are also perfect for stews, casseroles and you can use the lid as a frying pan for the perfect holiday fry-up! They can seem expensive but they will literally last a life-time if you look after them and don't forget you can also use them in the oven when you get back home.
We've listed some Dutch Oven options for you to buy from Amazon in the Amazon Ideas Wheel below. Just click on the picture to go straight to Amazon.co.uk.
A great way to use the Dutch Oven is to suspend it over the fire from a metal tripod or sit it on a cast iron trivet. You can also get these from Amazon by clicking below.
If you aren't sure how to cook with a Dutch Oven we've included some specialist recipe books that are just for this type of cooking.
Not every campsite allows open campfires so it's always a good idea to have an alternative cooking source. There are some great gas options from single, heavy duty, cast iron gas burners to gas bar-b-qs. Again we've listed our favourite options below in the Amazon Ideas Wheel.
Our favourites include the Nova Comet Gas Ring. This is a wonderfully sturdy cast iron gas ring that will take some heavy duty pans and should last for years and years. It's even sturdy enough to hold the classic Le Cruset whistling kettle.
If you need a bit more versatilty or you want to go all Jamie Oliver whilst you're camping then the Sungas Platinum Single Burner and Griddle is a great combination. At around £45 it's a really good buy.
Both of these items can be bought via Amazon by clicking on the item in the Amazon Ideas Wheel below.
If you have the luxury of a mains electricity hook-up then one of the Coolest adavances in camp cooking is the electric induction hob. Great for campervans, caravans or yurts and tipis (if you have mains electricity supply) these portable single or double plate hobs are easy to stow away when you're not using them. Unlike the older solid plate electric hobs the induction plates heat up incredibly quickly and are much more controllable.
CoolerCamping gets away from the need to live out of tins or worst still dehydrated camp food. Whether you're cooking over an open fire, using a gas cooker or induction hob there's no excuse not to eat well. You can even go foraging for some wild food...but MAKE SURE you know exactly what it is you're eating ...don't take risks it's just not worth it.
We've put together a slection of great camp cookbooks below to ensure your CoolerCamping experience is a gourmet one!
OK let's face it whilst many of us crave the opportunity to let loose in the great outdoors away from the stress and strains of everyday life others find the idea terrifying. What on earth will we do? We'll be bored to tears? What if it's raining? They wail. Yes, so it has been known to rain (even during the Summer!) in the UK but that doesn't mean CoolerCamping has to be boring - not for a minute - there's loads of things to do.
Check out 'The Happy Campers' book by Tess Carr and Kat Heyes who've been CoolerCamping ever since they were childhood friends. It's full of ideas for things to do - not just for kids - for adults with a low boredom threshold too!
They also have some wonderful coolercamping recipes and hints and tips on what equipment and ingredients to take with you. I've over-loved my copy so much it's fallen to pieces. Well worth getting - again it's available from Amazon below.
We've also included some other books full of ideas for stuff to do in the great outdoors - even if ......it's RAINING!!
This is a great piece of coolercamping kit. The aluminium or stainless steel kettle has a double skin (which the water goes into) and a hollow centre. It sits on a little platform where you build a small fire with little twigs and before you know it you have boiling water for your cuppa. Much faster than gas stoves for heating water and much more fun! They now come in a variety of sizes and with carry cases to make them easier to keep all the bits together.
Here's a great pice of kit that consists of a tripod, hanging chains, cooking pot and pancake pan for cooking over an open fire. It also has an optional integrated bazier that allows you to cook over charcoal without damaging the ground. Great idea!
