Appearing all over the Sunday supplements and as backgrounds for trendy clothes catalogues they are being heralded as the next, 'next big thing.' Let's face it they are an incredibly lovely design and can be used as the ultimate in Cooler Camping. Their stylish credentials mean they are versatile too. They can be turned into artists studios or offices or even mobile recording studios and vintage cocktail bars. The fact that they are made of aluminium makes the outside durable (the frames may rust though - they are made of steel!) and when they are polished to a gleaming shine they really are an object of desire.
Recent changes in the sterling:dollar exchange rate means they are less of a bargain to import from the states today (even if you were comfortable negotiating the shipping/import issues). If you do decide to go it alone make sure you do your homework first - you could end up buying a nightmare that will cost a fortune to make roadworthy or you may even find your trailer is too big to ever be road legal in the UK. If you want to buy a vintage Airstream that's already in the UK there are an increasing number of specialist companies that import them and even restore them for you. They will change the breaking and towing systems to bring them in-line with the UK road laws. They will also be able to advise you about the sort of towing vehicle you will need (a big one - they are quite heavy!). If you've got deap enough pockets you can even buy a brand new one from Airstream Europe.
